A workshop on Tilapia Feeding Strategies and Feed Manufacturing was held at the King’s Royal Hotel & Leisure Park, Bacolor, Pampanga on January 18-19, 2011.  It was organized and funded by the Aquaculture and Fisheries Collaborative Research Support Program (AquaFish CRSP), with its Host Country Principal Investigator (HCPI), Dr. Remedios B. Bolivar, in cooperation with the Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC).

This workshop was conducted to show tilapia growers, feed manufacturers, other stakeholders and government officials on the moderate feeding strategies as well as on more sustainable and least cost feed formulation of tilapia diets.

The event was attended by 51 participants.  The topics covered during the workshop ranged from tilapia production in the Philippines presented by Dr. Tereso A. Abella, Director of the Freshwater Aquaculture Center, CLSU, to feed manufacturing.  Two US collaborators of the program and renowned for their work on feed development from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, Dr. Peter Ferket and Dr. Charles Stark also presented during the workshop.  Due to some unavoidable circumstances, Dr. Ferket was not able to be physically present during the workshop but he presented his paper on least cost feed formulation by Webinar.  The Webinar required an internet connection (wireless or wired).  Basically, Dr. Ferket talked through his computer in Raleigh, while his powerpoint presentation was being shown at the workshop.  Another speaker, Dr. Bolivar shared to the participants her experience for participating in the AquaFish CRSP HCPI Exchange Project of Cichlid Culture. The US Lead Principal Investigator, Dr. Russell Borski presented about tilapia feeding strategies and replacement of fishmeal.

For this workshop, Feedmix Specialist, Inc., a feed manufacturer, provided the backdrop, welcome banners and streamers used during the workshop while the Santeh Feeds Corporation sponsored the dinner on January 18, 2011.
Overall, it was a successful workshop the fact that it was well-attended.
